With such a termperate climate, anytime is great for a ride!
New Zealand has temperate climate, usually warmer during the summer with colder winters – but without large temperature extremes and rain falls throughout the year. Therefore, the best time to travel is probably throughout the whole year.
In fact, New Zealand’s landmass covers a lot of latitudinal lines, which is why it can be warm in the North while it’s freezing cold in the south. Consequently, the North Island is more pleasant than the South Island in winter. Nevertheless, people love the South Island in winter, because then the Southern Alps are all covered in glistening white that reflects in the deep blue lakes.
New Zealand Seasons
It’s true to say, you can experience ‘four seasons in one day’ because the weather can change very quickly and unexpectedly. Always be prepared for weather extremes.
Traditionally, December, January and February are the warmest months and June, July, August are the coldest months. Temperatures in summer average between 20 – 30°C and in Winter 10 – 15°C.
Seasons:
Spring – September, October, November
Summer – December, January, February
Autumn – March, April, May
Winter – June, July, August
Geography
New Zealand is an island and the two main influences on the weather are the Southern Alps and the sea. These mountain ranges often catch the rain clouds which are trying to make their way over and more often than not you’ll have the most beautiful sunshine on the other side.
So our recommendation is to always chase the sun.

About Our Summer
The UV rays in our sunshine are very strong due to relatively little air pollution. In order to avoid sunburn, make sure you are dressed appropriately, sun screened, wear a hat and sunglasses.
The most intense UV radiation usually occurs between 12am – 4pm, which is why that might be the best time to travel and be on the road. In summer outdoor activities like hiking or walking should be postponed to morning and afternoon hours.
