Road Trips New Zealand
From Rolleston – Christchurch, cruise along the Alpine curves of the Great Alpine High or from Auckland blast along the Desert Road past New Zealand’s perfectly formed volcano – Mt Taranaki.
Starting from Rolleston – Christchurch
Our Rolleston depot is just 25km south from the Christchurch Airport, so already you will be starting your journey away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Rolleston sits at the entrance of The Great Alpine Highway SHW73 through to Greymouth, and the Inland Scenic Route SHW72 through to Queenstown. These highways are easy to follow, are well maintained and have plentiful spots to stop at along the way.
Inland Scenic Route 73 – From one side of the South Island to the other over dramatic Alpine roads via historic local towns. This route is approximately 225km. It travels the Southern Alps across the Canterbury Plains before the climb of the Alps through – Porters Pass and Arthur’s Pass National Park. You will be secretly delighted you choose to start your holiday from Rolleston. Highlights include the drive through the Otira Viaduct, stopping to view the natural land formations of the Castle Hill Rocks and Cave Stream Reserve.
Inland Scenic Route 72 – This classic New Zealand road trip keeps the Southern Alps in your sights – amidst idyllic rural scenery, surreal blue lakes and braided rivers. You will travel across mid-Canterbury’s rural riverside and gently rolling landscapes. If you feel like you need to see more then diverse off to Peel Forest 22km north of Geraldine and check out the rich native forest. Dropping onto SH79 brings increasingly hilly terrain before being introduced to the ‘ultimate’ Mackenzie Country. Through to Tekapo/Mt Cook you will be delighted (weather permitting) to get breath taking views of NZ’s highest mountain. Perhaps drop your bike at this point and go for a day hike!
